The author of RAPTURE shifts character type--from angels to vampires--with this satire of the supernatural and consumer culture. A few years ago, vampire Martin Marty Kowalski and a bunch of his bloodsucking friends decided it would be a good idea if more people in the world were vampires. Now, just about everyone is a vampire, and acquiring blood has become a routine trip to the grocery store to buy plasma grown in a lab. Deprived of the hunt, Marty has become almost suicidally bored by the time he encounters one of the few remaining humans on Earth, five-year-old Isuzu Trooper Cassidy. Intending to save her as a delightful, exotic snack, Marty delays feeding on Isuzu. This requires that he not only take care of the little girl in a world no longer equipped for living consumers (e.g., there's no more food industry or working toilets) but also protect her from other vampires. As time passes, Marty slowly transforms from predator to something even more frightening: a parent.
